Regulations and Procedures for the Fuchs Memorial Award

Regulations and Procedures for the Fuchs Memorial Award
1. AWARD
  1. The Fuchs Memorial Award recognizes outstanding original research contributions in the field of aerosol science and technology.
  2. Preference is given to achievement by a single individual, but the award may be conferred to more than one individual—such as a team of up to three people—or shared by two individuals judged equally meritorious.
  3. The Award consists of a certificate, a citation, and a $10,000 cash award. When more than one individual is selected, the cash award is shared equally.
  4. The Award is presented once every four years during the International Aerosol Conference organized by the International Aerosol Research Assembly. The winner(s) are invited to attend the Conference to receive the award and deliver a short presentation.
  5. The Award was created by three aerosol associations: the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR), Gesellschaft für Aerosolforschung (GAeF), and the Japan Association of Aerosol Science and Technology (JAAST).
2. NOMINATION
  1. Nominations are invited by public announcement and by letter to individuals, organizations, and institutions involved in aerosol research. Any member of any International Aerosol Research Assembly (IARA) member organization may submit a nomination. The Call for Nominations is posted on the IARA website.
  2. The Nomination Package must be submitted as a single PDF file and include:
    • A nomination letter from the Nominator providing justification for the candidate
    • A full curriculum vitae, including a detailed bibliography
    • At least three and no more than six supporting letters
    • A complete dossier assembled and submitted by the Nominator to the Chair of the Fuchs Memorial Award Selection Committee by the deadline stated in the announcement
  3. Members of the Award Committee are not eligible to nominate candidates or write supporting letters.
  4. Nominations are not carried over to the next award period; however, previously non-selected candidates may be re-nominated.
  5. Only living nominees are considered. Nominees do not need to be members of any aerosol organization.
3. FUCHS AWARD SELECTION COMMITTEE
  1. The Selection Committee consists of two representatives from each of the three associations (AAAR, GAeF, JAAST). Representatives are proposed by the current President of each association. Leadership of the coordination process rotates among the associations following each International Aerosol Conference.
  2. The Selection Committee is formed at least two years prior to the upcoming International Aerosol Conference and serves until a winner is selected for that cycle.
  3. Committee members elect a Chair, typically rotating among the representatives of AAAR, GAeF, and JAAST.
4. ORGANIZATIONAL
  1. Members of the Selection Committee serve for one selection cycle and may be re-nominated for one additional cycle.
  2. The Committee prepares the Call for Nominations and coordinates with IARA to update the website. Nominations must be received by April of the conference year, and a winner must be selected by June.
  3. The Chair manages all organizational activities, including issuing calls for nominations, receiving submissions, coordinating the selection process, preparing the citation, and arranging announcements. All actions are performed in consultation with the Committee.
  4. The Chair compiles evaluations from all Committee members and facilitates discussion. A candidate must receive support from at least two-thirds of the Committee to be selected. Each Committee may refine its procedures by unanimous agreement, but a two-thirds majority is always required to select a winner.
  5. The Committee retains the discretion not to select an awardee in any given cycle.
  6. Evaluations and deliberations are conducted in strict confidentiality.
  7. Voting may be conducted via email and is coordinated by the Chair.
  8. The three associations each cover one-third of the Award cost and related expenses (e.g., plaque preparation, receptions). Funds are transferred to the IARA Fuchs Award Account, currently managed by the AAAR Finance Group.
